    Tuckpointing & Brick Repointing Melbourne

Mortar is the sacrificial part of a brick wall. It is deliberately softer than the bricks around it, which means that over years of Melbourne weather — rain, heat, cold snaps and everything in between — the joints slowly erode, crack and crumble even while the bricks themselves remain sound.

Repointing is the process of removing that deteriorated mortar where appropriate and replacing it so the joints are closed up and doing their job again. Tuckpointing takes that a step further, finishing the repaired joints with a crisp line that sharpens the appearance of the whole wall.

Once mortar starts to fail, moisture finds its way into the joints and the deterioration tends to accelerate. Moss and staining around joints are often the first visible signs. It's tempting to simply render or paint over tired brickwork, but covering damaged mortar without repairing it usually just hides the problem while it continues underneath.

The right repair depends on the condition of the wall — the mortar, the bricks and what's causing the deterioration. MMR can assess the brickwork on site and recommend the approach that actually suits it.

    Brickwork Showing Signs of Deterioration

This photo is from genuine MMR brickwork repair work. It's the kind of deterioration we are regularly asked to assess: mortar joints that have cracked, opened up or fallen away, paint and render flaking from the bricks above, and moss and moisture sitting in and around the joints at the base of the wall.

Signs like these — deteriorated or missing mortar, cracked and open joints, weathering, and moisture gathering where the wall meets the ground — all indicate the mortar is no longer protecting the brickwork the way it should.

Every wall is different, so an on-site assessment is needed to determine the appropriate repair — whether that's localised repointing, broader tuckpointing, or repairs to the bricks themselves.

    Tuckpointing & Brick Repointing

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but there's a simple difference. Repointing is the repair: deteriorated mortar is removed where appropriate, the joints are prepared, and fresh mortar is worked in so the wall is closed up and sound again.

Tuckpointing includes that same repair work, then finishes the joints with a fine contrasting line — the detail that gives older brickwork its sharp, well-defined look. It's as much about restoring the appearance of the wall as its condition.

Where practical, repairs are matched to the existing brickwork — the mortar colour and joint finish — so repaired sections sit naturally alongside the original work rather than standing out from it.

Brickwork Problems We Can Help With

Most brickwork problems show up the same handful of ways. If any of these sound familiar, the wall is worth having looked at.

    • Crumbling or powdery mortar joints
    • Mortar missing from joints altogether
    • Cracked or separated mortar lines
    • Weathered, tired-looking brickwork
    • Localised brick damage or spalling
    • Moisture-related deterioration and moss growth
    • Open joints letting water sit against the wall
    • Areas of brickwork needing repointing or restoration
